City Council Public Hearing on Lewiston Homeless Shelter set for Monday | Local

LEWISTON – The Lewiston City Council will hold a public hearing Monday June 13th regarding the LC Valley Resource Center’s Conditional Use Permit to operate a 35 bed, low-barrier, overnight homeless shelter at 1322 G Street. As the permit currently stands, the shelter would be open from 7 p.m. – 11 a.m., staffed 24/7 and have a required security system on all exterior doors.

The public hearing was scheduled after the homeless shelter permit was appealed to the council by Haener Property LTD, the owner of the building at 1343 G street that is located directly across from the proposed shelter. This property is currently leased by Weaponsmart. The reasons listed for appeal include Weaponsmart potentially losing their business insurance if the shelter is approved, location issues, the proposed shelter not aligning with the goal of a beautiful downtown, concerns for environmental dangers, public safety, and loitering.

The Public Hearing will be held on the 2nd floor of the Lewiston Library at 6pm Tomorrow June 13th. The meeting will also be streamed live on the City of Lewiston facebook page.

Testimony for the hearing can be made in-person at the meeting, or in advance by emailing Kari Ravencroft at kravencroft@cityoflewiston.org or by calling (208) 746-7671 ext. 6203. Mayor Johnson asks citizens to limit their public comment to 3 minutes or less.
