BILOXI, Miss. (WLOX) – Albert Littell, a candidate in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate, outlined his platform, focusing on raising the federal minimum wage and expanding veterans’ benefits.
Littell proposed raising the federal minimum wage from $7.25 per hour to $20 per hour, noting it has not been increased since 2009.
“By doing this, this is giving dignity to our people as well as allowing them to supply what they need,” Littell said.
He said workers currently face difficult choices between paying for things such as car insurance or hospital bills.
Littell, a former Marine, also outlined a plan for all veterans receiving compensation. He proposed an automatic 5 percent annual cost-of-living increase.
“That will help them,” Littell said.
He also proposed hiring more doctors and nurses who have military experience to work at VA facilities and increasing pay for VA support staff.
Littell stressed that if elected to office, he will always focus on the facts.
“That’s what I’m about. I don’t know anything else but telling the facts and the truth,” Littell said.
The Democratic candidate said he decided to run for Senate because Mississippi residents “deserve better.”
The March 10 Democratic Primary also includes Scott Colom and Priscilla W. Till.
The Republican Primary for the U.S. Senate includes incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith and Sarah Adlakha.
Independent Ty Pinkins will be on the general election ballot on November 3, along with the winners of the primaries.
WLOX News contacted all candidates and invited them to participate in interviews throughout February to discuss their positions and priorities.
