A California woman recently had her home insurance canceled after nearly 40 years of coverage due to what was spotted by a drone flying over her property.

Joan Van Kuren had been been renovating her Modesto home for more than three years and was stunned when she received a letter from her insurance company, CSAA, informing her that her policy had been dropped. She invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into her home. She was notified by the insurance provider that they noticed a significant increase in hazards due to clutter and unsanitary conditions, calling it an unacceptable hazard and liability exposure. Van Kuren updated her driveway, kitchen, bathroom, and other areas, but the company told her there was a lot of debris on her property due to the project.

The company denied in a statement that they used a drone to inspect her property and used multiple sources to make the decision, according to Local 12 News. “It almost feels like someone’s looking in your windows when they tell you that they flew a drone over your home and looked at it,” she explained. Van Kuren added that the debris cited by CSAA was related to the final phase of her renovation project, and she was not given the opportunity to address the issue before her policy was canceled.

CBS Sacremento wrote in a similar report in July that a Google Maps screenshot of Van Kuren’s home showed a lot of debris and confirmed the presence of concrete work and an unfinished side yard with clutter. She added that she never recieved documents that supported her decision to cut off her plan.
