GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Home insurance premiums are increasing as rebuilding costs and disaster-related claims rise across the country, including here in northeast Wisconsin.
Severe weather in other states is contributing to the trickle-down effect on home insurance rates.
“Everything that they have to rebuild there, that’s that much less material and supplies available for here in Wisconsin. It pushes up our cost, and the insurance companies then say our costs to repair are that much more. We’ve got to up our cost also, it’s a shame, but it’s a fact of life,” says David Delain, the owner of the Delain Insurance Agency in Green Bay.
Insurance agent David Delain says his office has seen an uptick in claims related to strong hail and windstorms increasing insurance rates.
In previous years, the rate of increase was set at 6%, but recent data shows homeowners are seeing that number around 15-25%.
“What’s happening and what we’re seeing is insurance companies are going ahead and most of them are increasing the coverage on the home to match what they see as the inflation rate on it,” says Delain. Other major factors include the cost to rebuild or repair homes, which includes labor and supplies.
“If it’s imported, you’re bringing in lumber from Canada; the price of that has gone up. We’re seeing a combination of things that’s causing it; claims frequency and severity are part of it,” says Delain.
Delain recommends homeowners double check their rates to make sure coverage reflects current rebuilding costs.
“Sometimes the replacement cost estimator that companies use don’t match the reality, and so we have to recalculate it, and sometimes that increases the cost of their home if they’re paying for more coverage than what they really need,” says Delain.
Insurers also say homeowners should review their policies annually and ask about discounts for storm-resistant upgrades like hail resistant roofs.
