ST. MARTINVILLE, La. (NEWS 15) — Gov. Jeff Landry is pushing to lower car insurance costs in Louisiana. He rallied for support at the St. Martinville Chamber’s 47th Annual Awards Banquet that was held at the Cade Community Center on Wednesday, April 30.
In his keynote speech, Landry highlighted his proposal to give the state insurance commissioner more authority to reject rate increases.
“Maybe it’s time we do what Texas and Arkansas and Mississippi and Florida and Georgia and South Carolina and North Carolina does. You know what they do over there? Anybody wanna guess? They give their insurance department the ability to hold down your rates when we go out there and we make adjustments to the law,” Landry said.
The measure to give Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple added power passed in the House with mixed support, receiving only 50% approval from Republicans but unanimous support from Democrats. The bill now moves to the state Senate for consideration.
Landry’s proposal comes after the House approved bills favored by insurance companies targeting personal injury attorneys. Landry has emphasized that both insurers and attorneys are responsible for high rates.
