Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual), a mutual life insurance company that provides financial protection, retirement, and investment solutions, has announced the appointment of David Long, former Chairman and CEO of Liberty Mutual Insurance, to its Board of Directors.
“David’s exceptional track record of leadership and driving global growth, as well as his deep understanding of what a mutual company is all about – delivering long-term value to policyowners – makes him a welcome addition to our Board of Directors,” commented Roger Crandall, Chairman, President and CEO, MassMutual.
“We look forward to benefiting from his broad experience, insights, and contributions.”
Long spent nearly 40 years at Liberty Mutual, joining in 1985 and holding various leadership positions, including President in 2010, CEO in 2011, and Chairman in 2013.
During his time as CEO, Liberty Mutual expanded its global presence and moved forward with several acquisitions. He stepped down as CEO in January 2023 and retired as Chairman and Director in April 2025.
While at Liberty Mutual, Long also oversaw the company’s philanthropic efforts, which included financial contributions to community programmes. As Chairman, he was responsible for board leadership and governance oversight.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to join MassMutual’s Board of Directors and contribute insights and perspective from my four decades dedicated to achieving progress amidst constant change in the insurance industry,” added Long.
“I look forward to supporting the company’s enduring commitment to its purpose of helping people secure their future and protect the ones they love.”
In addition to his corporate background, Long serves on the board of trustees at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he is involved in the Aspire fundraiser for individuals on the autism spectrum. He also serves on the boards of Eversource Energy and Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C.
Long holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Hartwick College and a master’s degree in finance from Boston College. He has received honorary degrees from Hartwick College, Bentley University, and Merrimack College.
