In December, seven companies reported layoff and furlough plans that will affect nearly 500 Illinois workers.
The cuts were reported to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity as part of the Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.
Businesses that reported layoffs include a pharmaceutical manufacturer; a transportation and warehousing company; a logistics firm; a plastic products manufacturer; a truck, trailer and recreational vehicle rental and leasing company; an insurance company; and a clothing and accessories wholesaler.
Warehousing and storage firm closing two sites, laying off 230 workers
Citing a lost contract, APL Logistics announced in Dec. 1, 2025 and Dec. 2, 2025 WARN notices it will lay off 130 workers from one Minooka facility on Jan. 31 and 100 workers at a second Minooka site on Feb. 28. The Journal Star reached out to APL via email for further information but did not receive a response.
Insurance company announces spring layoffs for 37 Illinois workers
The Delaware-based company Everest Insurance announced Dec. 22, 2025, it will lay off 37 employees in Chicago. The layoffs are scheduled to take place March 31.
Founded in 1973, Everest Insurance is an international company that serves 115 countries across six continents, according to its website. It has U.S. locations in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Irvine, Texas; Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Stamford, Connecticut.

Illinois packaging company acquires another, rehires ‘most’ laid off workers
The packaging company MATEtronix US, Inc. has acquired the assets and operations of MPI Microplastics, Inc., and announced on Dec. 19, 2025, that it had laid off 86 employees in St. Charles. According to a MATEtronix spokesperson, the company has rehired most of the affected employees and will continue to operate the St. Charles location.
MATEtronix US, Inc. is the operational entity owned by the German firm MATEtronix GmbH & Co. KG together with SHB GmbH Packaging, a globally active packaging company with a strong focus on health and beauty and cosmetics packaging that operates production sites in Germany and serves an international customer base.
MATEtronix locations include two production sites in Germany, one production site in eastern Europe and one production site in Suzhou, China. With the acquisition of MPI, the company is completing its presence in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement region with operations in the United States.
Clothing wholesaler closing Illinois site, laying off 195 employees
The wholesale clothing and clothing accessories firm S&S Activewear submitted a WARN notice Dec. 4, 2025, announcing its intention to shutter its facility in Bolingbrook and lay off a total of 195 workers there. The initial layoff of 48 employees took place Dec. 4, 2025. The company will lay off 28 more workers in February. The final layoff of 119 employees will take place in November.

Transportation rental and leasing firm to lay off 59 workers in Illinois
Due to “changing business needs,” Ryder Integrated Logistics, Ltd. intends to close its truck, utility trailer and recreational vehicle rental and leasing center in St. Elmo. The company announced in a Dec. 30, 2025, WARN notice it will lay off 59 employees effective Feb. 28. A Ryder spokesperson said they are encouraging the affected employees to apply for other opportunities at www.ryder.com.
“Ryder remains committed to continuing to serve the needs of other customers in the state, where we continue to operate a number of sites,” the spokesperson added.
Pharmaceutical company closing Illinois facility, laying off 21
Adare Pharma Solutions, Inc. announced Dec. 1 it intends to close its Aurora site due to adverse economic conditions. The closure will impact a total of 21 workers. The first layoff date will be Feb. 2, and the final layoffs will take place July 1.
A company spokesperson said Adare will transfer most of the products currently at the Aurora facility to their site in Vandalia, Ohio. All impacted employees and clients have been notified of the closure.
“The company will make every effort to accommodate as many employees as possible at other locations,” the spokesperson added. “While very difficult, the company believes this decision is the right one to enable it to continue to support its clients and ultimately enable healthier lives for patients.”
Transportation firm loses contract, will lay off 55 in Illinois
Citing a lost contract and a facility closure, 10 Roads Express, LLC announced Dec. 1, 2025, that it will close its Homewood site. The company will lay off 44 employees Jan. 30, and a further 11 workers Feb. 28. The Journal Star reached out to 10 Roads Express by telephone and email for more information but did not receive a response.
