As college semesters begin across Pennsylvania, state officials and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster are reminding students to protect and insure their belongings.The Pennsylvania Insurance Department’s commissioner, Michael Humphreys, visited the college to highlight the importance of getting renters insurance.Most plans cost between $15 and $30 a month, but they can save students thousands of dollars when thefts, fires or accidents occur in off-campus housing.”We want Pennsylvania students to focus on learning and growing without having to worry about financial setbacks from unexpected losses,” Humphreys said.”All of our kids need to learn the value of insurance and what it can do for them as they head out into their bigger world. As a Spanish teacher, it was not part of my curriculum to get kids signed up for renters’ insurance, but I’m happy to be a cheerleader for it now,” said state Rep. Nikki Rivera, D-96. For those who have already moved in, it’s not too late to open a policy.Students can open a policy at any time, although there may be a waiting period before benefits can be used or claims filed.
