GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division reports that a Pickens County woman was charged after presenting a false claim for insurance payment on Friday.
Jakena Edreka Barton, 47, was charged with two counts of forgery – value less than $10,000 and presenting a false claim for insurance payment – value $10,000 or more, SLED said.
According to warrants, Barton submitted altered medical bills through text messages totaling $10,568. She then provided Progressive Direct Insurance Company with the altered bills.
Warrants said the account number listed on the medical bill returned to another patient with a different balance.
According to warrants, she was denied payment by the insurance company and was later booked into the Pickens County Detention Center.
The South Carolina Department of Insurance will prosecute the case.
