During the church liturgies, a beautiful symbolic transition takes place: the clergy change their dark mourning vestments for light and festive ones. This is a sign that the time of mourning is coming to an end, giving way to the joy of the Resurrection.

What time will the Descent of the Holy Fire take place in 2026, and where can you watch it online?

Only about 50 people will be allowed inside the Church itself—primarily members of the higher clergy and official delegations. Access to the Christian Quarter of the Old City will be strictly limited: checkpoints have been set up on the streets, and entry is permitted only with special digital passes. When should Easter baskets be blessed, and how do churches operate during wartime?

Holy Saturday is the traditional day when believers begin bringing Easter baskets to churches for blessing. However, under martial law in Ukraine, strict rules are in effect.

The Church and the authorities strongly urge citizens not to violate the curfew.

You should plan a trip to church for prayer and the blessing of Easter cakes during the day or evening on Saturday, or on Sunday morning, when movement restrictions will be lifted. For those who wish to participate in nighttime services, special online broadcasts will be organized, allowing you to celebrate the holiday safely at home.

What can you do on Holy Saturday?

This day is dedicated to inner silence and finishing household chores before Easter. Housewives can finish baking Easter cakes if they didn’t have time to do so on Maundy Thursday, and dye eggs—it is believed that eggs dyed on Saturday last the longest. Toward evening, it is customary to prepare an Easter basket, filling it with Easter cakes, eggs, meat, cheese, and salt. Holy Saturday is also considered a day of charity: believers try to help those in need, give alms, and engage in charitable acts. In the evening, many attend festive church services, trying to stay awake all night to greet the bright holiday spiritually prepared.

What is strictly forbidden on Holy Saturday before Easter?

Since Saturday is a day of spiritual peace, any commotion or noise is considered inappropriate. On this day, believers are instructed to refrain from heavy physical labor, field work, repairs, as well as major household chores such as laundry, cleaning, or washing windows (according to tradition, dirty water can symbolically “flood” the eyes of ancestors). Handicrafts should also be put aside.

Any loud festivities, dancing, birthday celebrations, or weddings are strictly forbidden. This is a time for inner reflection, so one must not quarrel, use foul language, take offense, or refuse forgiveness to those who ask for it. Additionally, taking the life of any living creature is considered a grave sin on this day, so hunting and fishing are strictly prohibited. The Church recommends that married couples refrain from intimate relations. It is also important to remember that strict fasting continues until Sunday morning (one must not eat cooked food or drink alcohol), and visiting cemeteries on Holy Saturday is not blessed.
