WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – As the first severe winter weather system of 2026 arrives in Kansas, state officials are urging residents to take steps to prevent damage to their homes from snow and ice.

The Kansas Department of Insurance recommends residents review their homeowners and renters insurance policies to understand what protections they have against common winter damage. Officials also advise contacting insurance agents to review policies and ensure coverage for potential winter-related damages.

Preventing winter damage

The department recommends several precautions to help prevent winter weather damages:

Residents should protect pipes from freezing by detaching garden hoses and winterizing irrigation systems. When temperatures drop drastically, officials recommend having faucets slightly drip and leaving under-sink cabinet doors open, especially with pipes near outer walls.

Homeowners should have furnaces inspected annually and change HVAC filters as directed on the package.

Officials also recommend sealing potential leaks by insulating homes or apartments to keep winter chill outside. Residents should check seals on attics, plumbing vents and recessed lights.

“Every Kansan should take precautionary steps this winter to protect their property from freezing temperatures and winter weather,” said Commissioner Vicki Schmidt. “If you need assistance with an insurance claim that arises from a winter storm, the Department is ready to help.”
